The Schools: East Acton and Tyssen Primary School

East Acton Primary School is located in Ealing and the students on the trip were from Years 5 and 6. Last term in school, these students completed the Enabling Enterprise projects “Going Live” and “Making News”. Tyssen Primary School is found in Hackney and the students on the trip were from Year 5 and earlier this year they took part in the “Operation Moon Base” challenge day at school.

The Business: Freshfields, London

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP is a leader among international law firms, providing business law advice of the highest quality throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the US. It is great for students to understand more about Law as it is a key aspect of Citizenship which makes them more aware of how the society they live in works.

The Challenge: Tricky Trials

Students worked as law firms on 3 different cases: Robin Hood was accused of armed robbery, Elsa from “Frozen” was accused of criminal damage and Woodcutter Will from “Little Red Riding Hood” was accused of attempted murder. The student teams worked either as the prosecution or defence and this meant they had to use their problem-solving and teamwork skills to present a persuasive case for or against the accused.

The Results:

The students worked particularly well in their teams especially since they were from two different schools and did not know each other at the start of the day. They also shared their ideas well as their presentations at the end of the day were confident and convincing. The students learned about the different roles within a law firm and how to make a persuasive case in court by using arguments, evidence and by cross-examining a witness.

What they said:

  • “It was inspiring to see the children engaged with something so challenging. They all had a pivotal role and everyone had a chance to shine.” – Teacher, Tyssen Primary School
  • “We had six amazing groups who worked so well as teams, especially considering you were from two different schools. We admire them all.” – Volunteer, Freshfields
  • “I enjoyed working in a team and I learned what it is to be a solicitor. I would like to work here one day!” – Student, East Acton Primary School

Thanks to Freshfields for such a great trip day, and to East Acton and Tyssen Primary Schools for coming along.
