At Oliver Wyman:
One of our long-standing supporters, Oliver Wyman, put on a great day for students from Bishop Douglass School in Finchley on Friday. The management consultancy gave the Year 10 and 11 students a well-rounded introduction to the real world of business through a series of through-provoking presentations and business games – and quite a few of them decided that they wanted to be management consultants!

What it takes
One thing that students commented on was the openess and honesty of everyone that they spoke to on the day: Realising that business success doesn’t come easily, but also that hard work and resilience can overcome any of the potential barriers that might emerge along the way – an important argument for students on the verge of taking their GCSEs! From hearing from senior partners, new joiners and support staff students developed a much better idea of how the biggest businesses make their money and what they needed to do if this was where they’d like to be.

The afternoon was based around students coming up with solutions for a small business in trouble. Working in teams facilitated by some of the Oliver Wyman consultants students had just an hour to create a compelling answer to the business’s problems and then present their ideas back at the end of the day to a panel of judges. The students dealt with the pressure admirably and hopefully took some ideas away to develop their own businesses over the rest of the year!

Many thanks to the teachers at Bishop Douglass, and to Oliver Wyman for organising such an interesting and thought-provoking day!
