Feltham Community College:
Students on our French course from Feltham Community College had the opportunity to put their international business skills into action on Thursday. After travelling all the way across London, the 13- and 14-year-old students were welcomed into Societe Generale – one of the world’s largest banks, headquartered in Paris but with offices all over the globe. They were about to see international business in action…

Languages in action:
The afternoon event was designed to explore how an understanding of other languages and international business are essential for so many high-flying jobs these days. Students started the afternoon by thinking about the huge range of different jobs that exist in the world, and being put on the spot to choose what six professions they would send to the moon to start a new world! There was a lot of “debate” between the groups, but it certainly opened students’ minds to new careers they’d never considered before – including psychiatry, civil engineering and many more!

The main focus of the afternoon, though, was the chance for students to interview four different volunteers from Societe Generale about their careers and how they ended up there, and how learning other languages had been helpful along the way. Some brilliant questions from our students and honest answers from our volunteers made it a really valuable session, and the afternoon was brought to a close by students presenting back what they’d learnt.

Lessons to take away:
Thanks go to Societe Generale for hosting such a great afternoon, and to our students for their outstanding attitude and enthusiastic approach. At the end of the afternoon, there were lots of learning points to take away – but most impressively one student commented: “I never knew that French would be so helpful – I’m definitely doing GCSE now!”
