20 lucky Year 4s from Southern Road Primary School in Newham got the chance to spend the day at the beautiful offices of Esmee Fairbairn, with a panoramic view over London – from Kings Cross to the Thames. Wowed by their stylish offices, meeting space and spacious reception areas, the setting provided great inspiration for their challenge ahead.

Office Investigations

After quizzing Jenny Fitzgerald, Head of Operations at Enabling Enterprise, and finding out more about what it’s like to work in an office, the children were set the challenge of designing a creative new office space for the staff at Enabling Enterprise. Exploring why it’s important to have happy employees, one student emphasised “There are 3 reasons it’s important to be happy at work: 1) to be a good listener; 2) to work well in a team; 3) to aim high.”

Imaginative Ideas

The teams were incredibly imaginative with the ideas. Cool Creators separated out their work space into a silent, thinking room with a library and a noisier meeting space with a leafy green design. Fantastic Four opted for a napping room with an x-box, a fire-pole to change floors and a Chinese chef. Brilliant Club made clever use of the space they had, creating work rooms, tv and i-pad spaces. Excellent extraordinary 8 were very practical with their suggestions, thinking carefully about how the office could have multi-function. And finally, the Extraordinary Entrepreneurs made some great, creative proposals – including a floatation room and on-site hotel for workers and VIP visitors.

Professional Presentations

The teams then spent the afternoon preparing their persuasive pitches to convince the VIP judges from Esmee Fairbairn that they should be the winning team. Putting into practices writing techniques and style suggestions, they did a fantastic job. The feedback from the teachers and judges speak for themselves:

“That was a fantastically slick presentation” – Caroline, CEO at Esmee Fairbairn

“We were really impressed with all the groups and choosing the winners was an incredibly hard task” – Jo, Grants

Manager at Esmee Fairbairn

“It was really proud of how confident you all were in your presentations” – Teacher, Southern Road

“It’s great to see the more enterprising students really have a chance to show off their skills” – Teacher, Southern Road

“You did better than we could have done!” – Teaching Assistant, Southern Road

What a great day! Another massive thank-you to Esmee Fairbairn for letting us visit their offices and providing such great judges, and well-done to all the Year 4s from Southern Road!
