On Thursday, Year 5 students from Petts Hill spent an exciting day at the Virgin Active Health Club in Stockley Park. In school, the students have been working on the “Active Minds” project and creating their own fitness sessions. The trip to Virgin Active was a great chance for them to experience a real-life fitness session and reflect on their own session.

A Healthy Lifestyle

The day started with a welcome talk from the staff at the Health Club and with the Petts Hill students volunteering lots of different sports and exercises that might take place in this particular gym. After the welcome talk the Year 5 students were lucky enough to go on a tour of the Health Club and take part in a real-life fitness session.

On the amazing tour of the Health Club the students saw lots of different parts of the gym and what people did in each of them. One Year 5 girl said that from the tour she “learned that there are different types of exercise you can do. I didn’t know about personal training or spinning but now I do”. At the end of the day when the Petts Hill students were reflecting on the trip, one Year 5 boy said that “the tour was the best part of the trip because they told us how to use the machines and we got to see the different activities people do”.

Enthusiasm and energy

The real-life “Zuu Chimps” fitness session was undertaken by all the Year 5 students with impressive levels of enthusiasm and energy. One Year 5 girl said, “I found it amazing. The exercises made you move a lot!” Another Year 5 girl mentioned how much she had enjoyed taking part in the fitness session noting that not only was she getting active but she was also learning: “First of all I was getting fit and also there were new moves I had to learn.”

At the end of the day the students gathered in the “Mind and Body Studio” to quiz three of the team from the Heath Club about their jobs, the skills they used in their job and what they most enjoyed about working at Virgin Active. One of the volunteers mentioned what great questions the students were asking, so well done to Petts Hill for being so inquisitive!
Next the students shared their fitness session ideas with the Virgin Active staff for their professional opinion. One group explained their “Disco ball” fitness session, “a mix of football and dancing” to which one of the staff said “that sounds great as people will be working their whole body in that activity”.

A day of enjoyment and learning

The final activity of the day was to sum up the trip in 3 words and students obviously enjoyed themselves and learned a lot judging by the words they chose to describe the trip: “fascinating”, “energetic”, “informative” and of course “active”!
A huge thank you goes to the staff at Virgin Active Health Club in Stockley Park for volunteering their time and advice and a big well done to the Year 5 students at Petts Hill for getting active and being so inquisitive.
