The Year 6 winners of Wheeler’s Lane Primary School challenge day showed us that they were well deserving of their success when they took a trip to IBM Warwick on Tuesday.

The aspirational attitude of the children was apparent from the outset; having won the enterprise competition in their school they were ready to make the most of the opportunity to put their learning into practice in a challenging business environment.

Building real life skills

Thankfully there were a few people to help the children along the way – a number of very enthusiastic volunteers from IBM. The children were able to find out more about IBM and talk to the volunteers about their own experiences in the workplace. They found out that the skills that these Year 6s are building will be useful in the world of work too. As one volunteer commented, “It is great that these students are building up these skills from a young age, the opportunity for teamwork will prepare them so well for the world of work”.

Planning a celebration event

Then came the hard bit; the children were set to work in teams to plan and present a celebration event for the staff of IBM. This challenge involved the children applying a range of skills, most notably their problem solving strategies. Throughout the process of research to ideas development and their final presentation, the children developed a range of ways to solve problems that came up. Not even flinching when their budget was cut, but instead thinking of ways in which they could make the food and decorations themselves. Fantastic resilience and problem solving from the International Business Masters team!

Persuasive pitches

When it came to their presentations, it was evident that the ideas were well thought through and every team had high aspirations for their event planning companies. Having clearly listened to the volunteers and ensured that they took note on the tour of the office about what would make a rewarding Celebration Event for IBM, their presentations were outstanding.

Super Computers team member explained that “business and corporations should reward their employees, so that they feel they mean something to you and it makes them feel motivated”.

While Intelligent Business Managers showed themselves to be exactly that when they explained that they were the best event planners because they are “organised and reliable, and answer clients’ queries well”.
The Incredible Business Makers showed that they had been researching thoroughly, by including statistics from their research in their presentation.

An enterprise success

Overall, the teams all did a fantastic job, and as one volunteer commented, “the most notable thing about the day was that I actually learnt a lot from the children!”

These children have got their sights set high and will undoubtedly achieve everything they set their mind to.
Well done to all, and a big thank you to the volunteers at IBM for making the day so rewarding.
