Consulting at Oliver Wyman

“What do consultants actually do?” is frequently heard by the good people of Oliver Wyman.

Well, more and more of students will avoid such dullness: At the end of Autumn term a group of year 10 students from Paddington Academy were taken out for the day to visit Oliver Wyman Management Consultants, and have since been followed by 30 more students, and many more planned.

After enthusiastically interrogating a cross-section of employees in the morning, by lunchtime half the group had arranged the  informed the staff to expect them back as employees in a few years time. The afternoon saw them put to the test however, as after just an hour of intense analysis and preparation alongside a real consultant, the students presented their solution to save an ailing fast food chain.

Impressively coming up to speed on consulting lingo, the winning team deployed “homogenisation, reintegration, and differentiation while both deep-diving, pulling-up and respecting one another’s bandwidth”. No, me neither.

One student described it as a “deep dive into consulting, whilst avoiding boiling the ocean to extrapolate some nuggets of insight to optimise our own future achievement!” We can only hope this is a good thing.

Thanks to Oliver Wyman for their generous support of our programmes this year and the schools that have already been along: Paddington Academy and London Academy (Edgware).
