Innovate IT Programme

This year-long programme, developed by Enabling Enterprise and the Forward Foundation, will provide an exciting new approach to ICT teaching for KS4. Students will explore ICT from the perspective of tech entrepreneurs, creating their own small ventures in the classroom, and visiting top tech companies to meet IT developers and see ICT in action. The result is students who see ICT in context, are excited about its role, and have also developed a wider set of enterprise skills, experiences of work, and aspirations for the future.

About Enabling Enterprise & Forward Foundation:
• Enabling Enterprise is a not-for-profit organisation with a proven approach, which has demonstrated a substantial impact on thousands of students’ enterprising skills, attainment and motivation across our partner schools across England. We create packages of teacher support, teaching resources and student trips to embed the development of key skills into classroom teaching, while giving students new experiences and raising aspirations.
• The Forward Internet Group is one of the UK’s top internet start-ups, running several successful web businesses including U-Switch, Factory Media, and Invisible Hand, and has won over thirty national awards for innovation, growth and technology. The Forward Foundation was set up to support organisations in helping young people to lead fulfilling and productive lives, through their guidance and expertise in technology and innovation.

Innovate IT:
Developed in partnership with the Forward Foundation, this programme provides an exciting new approach to ICT teaching for 14-16 year olds, placing the innovative and entrepreneurial nature of technology at the centre. The programme is made up of thirty hour-long sessions, beginning in the Autumn Term 2012. It will have a high level of business engagement from Forward, to support students with real-life case studies, but also to provide mentors and venues for the students to visit.
• Students will develop a range of technical skills that are regarded as highly useful by professionals in the ICT world, as well as wider enterprise skills.
• Students will apply these skills as they develop their own real life ICT focused project in teams.
• Students will gain professional experience of the world of technology as they visit Forward, and work alongside volunteers from the company, further developing their ideas and honing their skills.

The Programme:
• Enabling Enterprise provides all the teacher training, and teaching materials for the programme, as well as organising three trips to relevant businesses over the year.
• Forward’s real-life experience and expertise ensures that students learn the skills that will be most useful when they come to leave school, and especially if they want to work in the world of technology and innovation.
