The School:

Warren Farm Primary School is in their 2nd year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students from EYFS to Year 6 have been busy developing their Essential Enterprise Skills in lesson time projects. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 6 to put their Listening Carefully and Using Imagination skills to the test with the support from Student Ambassadors from Aston University in the heart of Birmingham City Centre.

The Business:

Aston is a leading UK university specialising in Business, Engineering and the Sciences with an international reputation – it has students from over 120 countries currently enrolled on undergraduate courses. Situated on a 60-acre campus in the heart of the city centre of Birmingham, it offers accommodation to over 3,000 of its 10,000+ undergraduate students, along with excellent amenities to support studies, work and leisure for students and staff alike – making it a popular choice for further study.

The Challenge: Uni-que University

A warm welcome from Jo Burrows, Student Recruitment and Outreach Officer at Aston University immediately put the 10 and 11 year olds at ease as they began to learn about the university. From the off they demonstrated super Listening Carefully skills and interviewed the student ambassadors to find out about their different experiences at university and the Essential Enterprise Skills required to do their courses. The Year 6’s then took the opportunity to tour the University, which allowed them to see the great variety of jobs people do to keep everything running smoothly for the students, the facilities available and certainly provided them with lots of ideas for their challenge!
Over the course of the day, teams explored what makes a university, before researching and designing their own dream university faculty as a way of channelling their Using Imagination skills. The day culminated in group presentations to persuade prospective future students to study there.

What they said:

  • “I like how now they aspire to go here!” – Teacher
  • “We all agree we’ve really enjoyed the day – it’s just been so great to see the children grow in confidence and to be able to hear their ideas and answer their questions about uni life is a privilege. I loved the challenge – such a positive thing for the children to experience. ” – Ambassador
  • “I think our team has really improved at our teamwork over the day and we feel much more confident.” – Student, Year 6
  • “I need to go home and speak to my Mom – I really want to study at University when I am older now. I have so many ideas of what I could do here!” – Student, Year 6

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
