The School: Blagdon Nursery

Based in Reading and part of the Whitley Excellence Cluster (WEC), Blagdon Nursery School are in their first year of working with Enabling Enterprise. A large Early Years centre for children aged 2 to 5, the school prides itself on ensuring all children get the best possible experiences in a rich learning environment where everyone is valued and enabled to achieve and enjoy success.

Today’s challenge was a fantastic opportunity for students from the part- and full-time Nursery classes, as well as the Willows Day Nursery, to explore how they use their Essential Skills in a challenge that was truly out of this world!

The Challenge: Operation Moonbase

Over the course of the day, students explored Teamwork skills as they Worked With Others to take a galactic journey to a distant moon called Utopia. A series of challenges required explorers to use their Essential Skills, particularly practising their Problem Solving, Creativity and Listening skills to learn more about their challenge.

Having dressed in their space suits, passed through their astronaut training and prepared their Space Passports for their journey, we were ready for lift off! There was a uge amount of Creativity on show as rockets were constructed, aliens were brought to life and planets, stars and galaxies were captured in full colour. Students also needed to use their Listening skills to learn more about what their friends had seen and created on their journeys as they took turns in Presenting their experiences back to the group.

What they said:

  • “It’s lovely to see them get into the day and they have really enjoyed sharing new ideas with each other.” – Teacher
  • “I went to space with my friends. I am happy!” – Student
  • “The day is perfect for these kids as it fits in really well with a Nursery class set-up and gives the kids so much to think about and to explore.” – Teacher
  • “One of the children for whom communication can sometimes be an issue sat down at the end of the morning and told me all the things he’s done and then walked straight up to his parents and told them he’d been to space today!” – Teacher
  • “I don’t want to go out to play, I just want to stay in the classroom and wait for my model to dry.” –
  • Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great Challenge Day!
