The School:

From the London Borough of Newham, Southern Road Primary is in its sixth year working with Enabling Enterprise to develop a set of eight Essential Skills in their students. Over the years, students have had the opportunity to practise their essential skills through Challenge Days as a whole school, but also on a range of employer visits to top businesses across London such as Costain Skanska and the Department for Education this academic year alone. In the heart of football season and ahead of their upcoming Sports Day, today was the perfect occasion for students to show off their Creativity as every class took on this one-of-a-kind challenge with gusto.

The Challenge: Game On

The day started with each class being represented in the Olympics-style Opening Ceremony in a special assembly. Over the course of the day, students used their Teamwork skills to design a brand new sport that could be played as a team and promoted a sense of community. By looking at current popular sports, the students developed an understanding of how surfaces, equipment and people affect gameplay. Throughout the day, they also considered how sports can not only challenge a player’s physical ability but also put their intellect as well as their essential skills to the test – some were especially keen to champion Aiming High and Staying Positive as they designed the most imaginative games that required a lot of perseverance.

Some teams were lucky enough to try out their newly made discipline in the playground. At the end of the day, each team used their Presenting skills to share their new sport with the rest of their class, who then voted on the best idea. As an extra special incentive, an overall winning sport was going to be chosen for the one new sport that the whole school would play on their Sports Day.

What they said:

  • “It’s such a good time to do this, the children are all so excited ahead of Sports Day.” – Teacher
  • “For me there was one stand-out moment today when I asked them to talk about what their leader did to lead their team well, and they really surprised me saying things like ‘He or she let everyone have a go, or was really listening carefully to everyone…’ and for some of them, I wasn’t expecting that. I must say it did bring a little tear to my eye!” – Teacher
  • “We don’t really want one leader for the whole day, so how about we all take turns at Leading? That way, everyone gets to be a team captain!” – Student
  • “Maybe we could let the quietest person go first so we hear everyone’s ideas.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great Challenge Day!
