The School:

Hannah More Primary is in their first year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students will continue to develop a set of eight Essential Skills by taking part in an Operation Moonbase Challenge Day later this term. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 5 to put their Working in a Team and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Jones Lang LaSalle Incorporated or JLL is a professional services and investment management company specialising in real estate. JLL employ more than 58,000 people in more than 1,000 locations in 80 countries. Alongside construction, development and property management, JLL also offers a range of financial services.

The Challenge: Decisive Developers

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Essential Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of construction.
Taking on the role of Developers, students were then challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to establish on which site to choose to build their new tall building. Taking the location and needs of the community on board, teams then worked together to build a tower using limited materials. During the build, the teams’ Staying Positive skills were also put to the test as new challenges arose, which put the developers’ budgets under strain.
The day culminated in teams pitching their plan for development to the judges, who posed as local and new residents, to see if their building was suitable for construction.

What they said:

  • “It’s been great to see how engaged my children have been and how every single child was included and doing something in their team. The children have learnt so much. Most significantly the key behaviours/responsibilities an individual needs to be an effective team member.” – Teacher
  • “I’ve really enjoyed interacting with the children and helping them learn about team work and problem solving.” – Volunteer
  • “It was good today. The best thing I did was building the tower. It was fun when we had to work together in silence for 5 minutes!” – Student
  • “It was easy working in a team because everyone listened to each other and shared their ideas. It was much better than if we did it on our own.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
