The School:

Greenwood Academy is in their fourth year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Essential Skills through Challenge Days such as Start-up Success.

Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 8 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Unity Trust Bank specialise in working with organisations and businesses that aim to create community, social or environmental benefit in a financially sustainable way. They seek to put social change at the heart of everything they do by offering specialist banking and finance to organisations that have a positive impact on their communities.

The Challenge: Lend-a-Hand

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Essential Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of finance.
Taking on the role of Financial Advisors, students were given the task of advising a client to make sensible financial decisions for a range of different life events. Teams had to put their Problem Solving skills to the test to work out the pros and cons of different suggestions. Taking the priorities and needs of the client on board, teams then worked together to suggest the best possible course of action for their client. The teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test when they realised that decisions they had made earlier on were having an impact on the advice they were giving their client later in the day.
The day culminated in teams holding a budgeting meeting with the client to share their top tips and financial advice. Volunteers watched the meeting and used their expertise to judge which team had used their Problem Solving and Staying Positive skills to make the most sensible decisions along the way.

What they said:

  • “It’s been great to see students developing communication and teamwork skills and having in depth discussions on their ideas. The organisation of the day and support from the volunteers has been very good” – Teacher
  • “It’s been an enjoyable day for us and I think the students have got a lot out of it!” – Volunteer
  • “I enjoyed the problem solving and I’m proud that we were able to work in a team with people we didn’t know well and present back our work.” – Student
  • “What I learned today is ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ – I didn’t know banks do so many interesting things!” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
