The School:

Alderton Junior School is in their fourth year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Essential Skills by working through a range of Lesson-time Projects and creating exciting new forms of transport for future societies! Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 5 to put their Staying Positive and Listening Carefully skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Societe Generale is a French multinational banking and financial services company head-quartered in Paris. They are one of the largest European financial services groups. As a universal bank, Societe Generale not only offers Retail Banking in France but also International Banking, Financial Services and Corporate and Investment Banking, worldwide. Today’s volunteers worked across different sites and in a variety of roles including Trading, Compliance and Management of different teams. They all provided valuable insights into the world of work and finance, as well as supporting the teams throughout the day.

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

The day started off with the students showing off the focus skills of Listening Carefully and Staying Positive in a creative warm-up. They then found out a little more about Societe Generale by interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Essential Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of finance.
Taking on the role of Stock Market Traders, students were given the task of investing £25,000 on behalf of a client. Teams had to put their Problem Solving skills to the test to work out the pros and cons of different companies before making their investment decisions. They had to re-evaluate their decisions as they received updated information about the changes in the market.
The day culminated in teams holding a presentation to share the outcomes of different investments and how they had used their skills today. Volunteers watched the presentation and used their expertise to judge which team had used their Listening Carefully and Staying Positive skills to make the most sensible decisions along the way. All teams received skill awards and the overall winner were the “Little Londoners” because of the way they stayed positive to overcome many different challenges.

What they said:

  • “I’m really proud of them. They’ve been engaged and are really excited to see businesses like this.” – Teacher
  • “It has been a really enjoyable experience. I wouldn’t be surprised if I see some of them working here in the future.” – Volunteer
  • “I’ve enjoyed everything about today; it’s been so much fun and is a great place.” – Student
  • “We are the best traders in town because we won’t ever give up.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
