The School:

Arundel Court Primary is part of the University of Chichester Academy Trust and took up this exciting opportunity from Enabling Enterprise to take part in a taster business trip for a lucky few students from Year 6. Previously they have visited Portsmouth University to learn more about careers. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for ten students aged 10 and 11 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test outside their usual school environment and learn about the world of property development as they were supported by professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Jones Lang LaSalle Incorporated or JLL is a professional services and investment management company specialising in real estate. JLL employ more than 58,000 people in more than 1,000 locations in 80 countries. Alongside construction, development and property management, JLL also offers a range of financial services.

The Challenge: Decisive Developers

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Essential Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of construction.
Taking on the role of Developers, students were then challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to establish on which site to choose to build a new tall building. Taking the location and needs of the community on board, teams then worked together to build their tower using limited materials. During the build, the teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test as new challenges arose, which put the developers’ budgets under strain.
The day culminated in teams pitching their plan for development to the judges, who posed as local and new residents, to see if their building was suitable for construction.

What they said:

  • “I have been so proud of all the students today, especially with how they answered the judges’ questions – they were confident and professional!” – Teacher
  • “It’s been such a fun day and we’ve been so impressed with their ideas! The winning team has made real progress in their sharing ideas and confidence.” – Volunteer
  • “I enjoyed working on the construction activity. We worked well as a team and stayed positive when we had to face the fines.” – Student
  • “During the presentation I was nervous and my notes didn’t make sense, so I had to just make it up on the spot, which went pretty well!” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
