The School:

North Birmingham Academy is in their first year working with Enabling Enterprise, as part of the Aiming High programme in partnership with Newman University. Previously, a group of students took part in a workplace visit. Today’s challenge was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 10 to put their Essential Skills to the test.

The Challenge: A Day in Politics

Over the course of the day, students had the opportunity to practise their Working in a Team skill by setting up their very own political parties. They dived head first into the political arena, sharing their knowledge, speaking up passionately during a debate and finding out more about the policies of parties before Sharing Ideas to create their own manifestos. Hustings were carried out and votes were cast.

What they said:

  • “Clearly a very positive day. These skills are so needed by us all. As our students make decisions for their futures – these skills will be so valuable to them.” – Teacher
  • “I’ve learnt a politician would need to listen. I’m not sure they always do – maybe they need to work on developing their skills further.” – Student
  • “I never speak up – ever – but today I’ve pushed myself. I’ve worked out of my comfort zone and surprised myself. I feel more confident. Thank you!” – Student
  • “I hope to have a future in politics. It really interests me.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great Challenge Day!
