The School:

Wohl Ilford Jewish Primary is in its first year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing a set of eight Essential Skills by designing and building new forms of transport for the future. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 6 to put their Sharing Ideas and Problem Solving skills to the test outside the classroom as they were supported by professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Founded in 1846, Bird & Bird have over 1100 lawyers in 27 offices across Europe, the Middle East and Asia; their head office is in London. They have a focus on strategic commercial issues and have won numerous awards for the quality of the legal work they provide.

The Challenge: Tour the Law

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Essential Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of Law.
Taking on the role of Lawyers, students explored two different areas of law – Criminal and Business Law – through separate cases designed to stretch their Problem Solving skills. The first case saw them act as mediators in a business merger, finding different possible solutions and considering the pros and cons of each. In the second task, the teams of students had to review police evidence and then play the part of a defence lawyer to build a case for their client.
Sharing Ideas skills were put to the test as new challenges arose, and also at the end of the day when each team presented their findings to a panel of professional judges.

What they said:

  • “The children have got so much out of today – this has been an extremely valuable experience.” – Teacher
  • “The students asked thoughtful, challenging questions that definitely kept me on my toes!” – Volunteer
  • “My team was successful because we identified the problem we had and came up with lots of solutions to solve it.” – Student
  • “The presentations at the end were engaging and well thought-out. I think the students have made considerable progress throughout the afternoon.” – Volunteer

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
