The School:

Woolenwick Primary School is in its first year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing a set of eight Essential Skills by designing greetings cards in teams and by becoming social entrepreneurs. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 6 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test in the world of work as they were supported by professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Atkins is one of the world’s most respected design, engineering and project management consultancies. Recent projects include Crossrail, Birmingham New Street Station and the diagonal crossing at Oxford Circus.

The Challenge: Decisive Developers

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Essential Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of construction.
Taking on the role of Developers, students were then challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to establish on which site to choose to build a new tall building. Taking the location and needs of the community on board, teams then worked together to build their tower using limited materials. During the build, the teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test as new challenges arose, which put the developers’ budgets under strain.
The day culminated in teams pitching their plan for development to the judges, to see if their building was suitable for construction.

What they said:

  • “[A highlight for me has been] seeing the children who don’t always engage readily at school who are suddenly fired up and are asking questions I hadn’t even considered!” – Teacher
  • “The children have got so much out of the day and it was so great to get to show them where we work and the projects we work on. It was good to focus on the skills you need as well as STEM.” – Volunteer
  • “I think we’ve used all the skills today but really we learnt about Staying Positive and how that can affect the team too.” – Student
  • “I’m really proud of my whole team and how we got so much better at Teamwork. This morning we were all talking over each other, but we managed to get so much more done when we listened to each other.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
