The School:

Rotherhithe Primary are in their second year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Previously, students put their Essential Skills into practice by developing new societies on a distant moon for their exciting Moonbase Challenge, as well as working on a range of projects in school. At the end of the Summer term, the whole school will be taking on the roles of Engineers, as part of the ‘Future Transport’ Challenge Day. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 5 to put their Presenting and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Allen & Overy’s lawyers in London advise the world’s leading businesses, financial institutions, governments and private individuals. They regularly work on complex cross-border transactions, ground-breaking legal solutions and products, and help clients resolve their most difficult disputes. They employ 5,200 people in 44 offices across 31 countries.

The Challenge: Tour the Law

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Essential Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, visiting the offices, library, canteen and rooftop garden; which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of Law.
Taking on the role of Lawyers, students explored two different areas of law, Criminal and Business Law through separate cases designed to put their Problem Solving skills to the test. The first case saw them review police evidence and then play the part of a defence lawyer to build a case for their client. In the second task, the teams of students act as mediators in a business merger, finding different possible solutions and considering the pros and cons of each.
Sharing Ideas skills were put to the test as new challenges arose, and also at the end of the day when each team presented their findings to a panel of professional judges.

What they said:

  • “It was really good for the students to revisit the skills in the working environment, before we complete our Future Transport challenge day next half-term!” – Teacher
  • “We were really impressed with the students Problem Solving skills during both cases. Well done!” – Volunteer
  • “I definitely want to work here one day!” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
