The School:

Based in the London Borough of Hackney, London Fields Primary is in its third year working with Enabling Enterprise. Previously, students have been busy developing a set of eight Essential Skills by completing our Moonbase Challenge Day as a whole school, but also taking part in employer visits to businesses across London. Ahead of their Careers Week coming up, today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 4 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Metaswitch is a UK-based company that designs, develops, manufactures, and markets telecommunications hardware and software, solving complex communication issues for large organisations. Today’s volunteers, Ollie and Julian, provided inspiration for the students and insight into this exciting industry.

The Challenge: Tech-Xperts

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Essential Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of technology. Student even got the chance to test out some of the gadgets and apps already in use at Metaswitch.
Taking on the role of Technology Companies, teams were then challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to design a new app that employees could use to improve their communication. Alongside choosing a catchy name for their new app, teams thought about the different functions the app would have and how each of these might help solve a communication problem. Teams worked together to make key design decisions including the app’s key colours and what the home screen might look like.

The day culminated with the Technology Companies Sharing Ideas about their app and how they had developed their Problem Solving in front of the room, whilst the judges watched their presentations.

What they said:

  • “The student progress in skill development throughout the day was outstanding!” – Teacher
  • “Really impressive presentations at the end of a challenging day – they’ve done really well!” – Volunteer
  • “Our app is the best because it can help everyone communicate better!” – Student
  • “I’m really proud that my team won the “most improved group” award – we found it hard at the start of the day but once we got designing our app we all came together and worked as a team to finish the task.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
