The School:

Oasis Academy Woodview in Ladywood is in its 5th year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing a set of eight Essential Skills through Lesson-Time projects and will be completing a Challenge Day in the Summer Term.

Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 5 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test outside the classroom, with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Colliers International is a leader in global real estate, offering comprehensive services to investors, property owners, tenants and developers around the world. A subsidiary of FirstService Corporation, Colliers has 502 offices worldwide and employs over 16,000 people.

The Challenge: Decisive Developers

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Essential Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of construction.
Taking on the role of Developers, students were then challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to establish on which site to build a new tall building. Taking the location and needs of the community on board, teams then worked together to build their tower using limited materials. During the build, the teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test as new challenges arose, which put the developers’ budgets under strain.
The day culminated in teams pitching their plan for development to the judges, who posed as local and new residents, to see if their building was suitable for construction.

What they said:

  • “The volunteers were excellent with the students today – really friendly and helpful with the challenge. The task was stretching for the students but fun and kept everyone engaged.” – Teacher
  • “It’s been an inspiring day, the students have been wonderful to work with and clearly very excited. It’s been a learning experience for us as well.” – Volunteer
  • “The best bit of today was learning about all the different jobs – I would like to work here one day.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
