The School: George Salter Academy

George Salter Academy, based in West Bromwich, are new to working with Enabling Enterprise this year. Students from their Sixth Form, who are currently studying Law, took advantage of the opportunity to travel out of school to a real life law firm. They were keen to explore the skills and qualifications that are necessary for a career in Law, by meeting people who work in this industry.

The Business: Gowling WLG, Birmingham

Gowling WLG is a Global 100 legal practice, with over 1,400 legal professionals and a range of dedicated business support teams across 19 cities in the UK, Canada, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Today, volunteers from across the Birmingham offices met with George Salter students to share their experiences of working in various legal, HR, marketing and administrative professions.

The Challenge: Ace Advocates

Students began the day by interviewing Gowling WLG volunteers about their day-to-day jobs and the routes they took to become part of an international law firm. They found out about the Essential Skills necessary to succeed in Law, specifically Presenting and Listening. Then, they went on a tour to see Gowling WLG’s work in action; this included meeting different lawyers and a company director. They heard about the importance of being committed to their studies, regardless of the subjects they’ve chosen.

After lunch, students took on the role of lawyers, taking on opposing clients in a fictional negotiation case. One team represented Mega Movies, who want to film scenes for a violent action movie on the Elmington Estate. The other team represented the Elmington Estate Residents Association, who were concerned about the negative reputation they’d be branded with as a result.

The Results:

The budding lawyers applied Listening skills by asking probing and relevant questions during group discussions, to delve deeper into the details of their respective cases. They then applied Presenting skills by anticipating how the opposing team might react to certain aspects of their presentation, and planning how they would deal with challenges and questions during the negotiations.

What they said:

  • “The information sessions, interactive group activities and the teaching style were all fantastic. The volunteers were great!” – Teacher, George Salter Academy
  • “You were incredibly passionate in your delivery of the case from your clients’ perspectives and really took both sides into account in the way you structured your presentation.” – Volunteer, Gowling WLG
  • “Today has given me a better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses.” – Student, George Salter Academy
  • “Its been interesting to chat to people who have been through what we are going through at the moment, and to hear that these skills are relevant to their jobs.” – Student, George Salter Academy

Thanks to Gowling WLG for such a great trip day, and to Year 12 from George Salter Academy for coming along.
