The School:

Pelham Primary School is in their 4th year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by designing a new computer game on their ‘Level Up!‘ Challenge Day. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 5 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Brewin Dolphin is one of the UK’s leading providers of personalised, discretionary wealth management services, offering investment management and financial planning services to investors and intermediaries. With origins dating back to the mid-18th century, they were one of the founding firms of the London Stock Exchange. They have 28 offices throughout the UK & Ireland and have a wealth of experience dealing with investment markets.
Today we were joined by Brewin Dophin’s IT team: Vanu, Harry, Jamie, Campbell and Nicola.

The Challenge: Tech-Xperts

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the essential Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students were able to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of finance, and how the IT team supports Brewin Dolphin to be a successful company.
Taking on the role of Technology Companies, teams were challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to design a new app that Brewin Dolphin employees could use to improve their communication. Alongside choosing a catchy name for their new app, teams thought about the different functions the app would have and how each of these might help solve a communication problem. Teams worked together to make key design decisions including the app’s icon and how it would appear in the app store.

The day culminated with the Technology Companies Sharing Ideas about their app and how they had developed their Problem Solving in front of the room, whilst the judges watched their presentations.

What they said:

  • “This day is exactly what students should be having access to. A fun, engaging day, providing them with the skills they need in the working world. It has been fantastic!” – Parent
  • “I have really enjoyed today. I am so impressed with how they have grasped the concepts. I am even more impressed with how well these 9- and 10-year olds commanded the room during their presentations. I’m not sure I could have achieved that at their age!” – Volunteer
  • “Today was super fun! Can we do it again?” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
