The School:

Grendon Primary School is in its fourth year working with Enabling Enterprise. Students from Year 1 to 6 have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by during lesson time projects and special key stage challenge days. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 3 and 4 to put their Sharing Ideas and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

IBM, founded in 1911, is one of the most famous information technology companies in the world, with operations in 170 different countries and over 400,000 employees globally. It now focuses on generating innovative solutions for business problems and is a major research organisation, constantly evolving and innovating.

The Challenge: Tech-xperts

A warm welcome from IBM volunteers (or IBM’ers as they are known) and enthusiasm from the off from the Grendon group saw the students able to interview the volunteers to find out about IBM, their different roles, responsibilities and the essential skills required to do their jobs. The eager 8 -10 year olds then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed them to see the different workplaces within this tech environment.
Back in the boardroom, teams took on role of Technology Companies, challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to design a new app that employees could use to improve communication within IBM and also with clients. Teams thought about the different functions the app would have and how each of these might help solve the most pressing of communication problems. Teams worked together to make key design decisions including the app’s icon and how it would appear in the app store.

The day culminated with the Technology Companies Sharing Ideas about their app and how they had developed their Problem Solving in front of the IBM ‘judges’.

What they said:

  • “I thought the day was super – really good fun and gave every child a chance to shine. I feel really proud of them.” – Teacher
  • “The children have really impressed me – so engaged and enthusiastic. It was a pleasure to work with them. They most definitely used their essential skills effectively to complete the challenge.” – Volunteer
  • “My favourite part of the day? Can I say all of it? I liked finding out about Nick, James and Kiril’s jobs and going on the tour. I also liked doing the presentation – I get nervous, but I did my best with my team and now I feel proud to say I did a presentation at IBM! It’s a big company and I did a presentation there!” – Student
  • “My team have used all of our skills really well. It’s been a great day. I’d like to come again! ” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
