The School: The Forest School

Based in Winnersh in Berkshire, The Forest School are in their first year of working with Enabling Enterprise. An all-boys secondary and sixth form, the school provides an inclusive education for its students, striving to develop the whole person and ensure that every pupil is fully equipped for life through core values of being Aspiring, Safe, Prepared, Independent, Respectful, Excellent. By working with Enabling Enterprise, staff aim to embed the development of students’ essential skills and raise aspirations for future learning and work.

Today’s challenge was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 9 to put their Essential Skills to the test as they entered the world of business.

The Challenge: Business in a Day

Students were excited to hone their enterprise skills throughout the day by competing in teams to set up a merchandise company. The groups needed to demonstrate that they were Aiming High and demonstrating great Leading as they identified their own skills, strengths and interests to allocate roles and set themselves targets for the day. Using their teams’ collective Creativity and Teamwork, students quickly formed their own company and designed a new range of merchandise and souvenirs to sell at chosen events to their target markets.

Creativity was paramount as students designed a logo and slogan for their companies and then designed and created prototypes for their products. Teams then used their Problem Solving skills to devise business plans and calculate their final profits. Finally, the companies set about marketing their merchandise through targeted promotion, which included social media campaigns and celebrity-endorsed tweets!

Amongst the most creative and innovative companies’ ideas were phone cases and snacks to celebrate the upcoming football World Cup, commemorative Royal Wedding tea sets and portable air conditioning units to fit inside jackets and clothing at festivals!

What they said:

  • “The boys have got a lot out of today, especially the teamwork skills. One of the tutors also said she saw a different side to some of her students who aren’t always easy to engage; they were actively involved in the tasks because it was relevant to them.” – Careers Co-ordinator
  • “We had many doubts along the way about the originality of our ideas, but we used good teamwork to pool our ideas and think creatively to design something new and exciting.” – Student
  • “It’s been great to see them working together so well today and to be engaged in a project for the whole day.” – Head of Year
  • “I was a little surprised by the results of the ‘Job Personality Quiz’ because the job role it recommended for me is not something I would always feel confident to put myself forward for, but it was good to stretch myself and see what I was capable of.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great Challenge Day!
