The School:

From the London Borough of Waltham Forest, Selwyn Primary School is in its third year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Previously, students have been busy developing a set of eight essential skills by investigating a crime scene on their very own school premises and by visiting top employers across London such Westfield this academic year. Today’s challenge was a fantastic opportunity for students from Reception through to Year 5 to put those same skills to the test once more with gusto. Let’s find out how they got on…

The Challenge: A Day in Politics

Over the course of the day, students had the opportunity to practise their Working in a Team and Leading skills by taking on the role of aspiring politicians. They dived head first into the world of politics, learning about democracy and carrying out debates before setting up their very own political parties. Whilst Reception students were practising voting and came up with their own logos in their teams, students in the older year groups were Sharing Ideas and Problem Solving on which areas of society they wanted to help and how they might spend their money to support them. Finally, teams held an exciting election to determine who had created the most persuasive political party!

What they said:

  • “This class usually struggles with teamwork but actually, having the scoreboard and reminding them of all of the skills as we go is really useful, and they’ve shown great improvement already, compared to last year.” – Teacher, Year 2
  • “Oh, they really like these enterprise days because they get a lot out of it!” – Teacher, Year 5
  • “I think some children in my class have come up with better ideas than some of the politicians in Parliament!” – Teacher, Year 3
  • “A great leader is someone who listens to everyone’s ideas and not just chooses their own idea.” – Student, Year 3
  • “… And we’re going to explain why taking care of the planet is also taking care of each other.” – Student, Year 4
  • “We want to make the world a healthy place to live in, so if you want this to happen, come to the Enterprise Experts!” – Student, Year 4

Thanks to everyone for such a great Challenge Day!
