The School:

Oasis Academy Woodview is in its 5th year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing a set of eight Essential Skills by through Lesson-Time Projects, Challenge Days and employer visits to top businesses across the West Midlands

Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 5 to stretch their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills outside the classroom whilst being supported by professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Unity Trust Bank specialise in working with organisations and businesses that aim to create community, social or environmental benefit in a financially sustainable way. They seek to put social change at the heart of everything they do by offering specialist banking and finance to organisations that have a positive impact on their communities.

The Challenge: Lend-a-Hand

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Essential Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of finance.
Taking on the role of Financial Advisors, students were given the task of advising a client to make sensible financial decisions for a range of different life events. Teams had to put their Problem Solving skills to the test to work out the pros and cons of different suggestions. Taking the priorities and needs of the client on board, teams then worked together to suggest the best possible course of action for their client. The teams’ Staying Positive skills came to the fore when they realised that decisions they had made earlier on were having an impact on the advice they were giving their client later in the day.
The day culminated in teams holding a budgeting meeting with the client to share their top tips and financial advice. Volunteers watched the meeting and used their expertise to judge which team had come up with the most sensible financial decisions and used their essential skills to the highest standard.

What they said:

  • “The students have had a wonderful day and do not want to leave! They have put their problem solving skills to work on some complicated real-life problems and showed great presenting skill at the end.” – Teacher
  • “The students were such a pleasure to work with – enthusiastic, inquisitive and completely engaged in the challenge.” – Volunteer
  • “I’m proud that I was presenting without notes today.” – Student
  • “The hardest part of the today was deciding the best thing for the family to do because there was so much to think about.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
