The School:

Located near Sidcup in Kent, Longlands Primary School is in its fourth year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Previously, students have been busy developing a set of eight Essential Skills by visiting top employers across London such as IBM, NatWest or more recently, developers Anthology. The whole school has also taken on several Challenge Days to apply those skills, for example when they investigated a mysterious crime scene on their school premises. Today’s challenge was a fantastic opportunity for students from Reception right through to Year 6 to put those same Essential Skills to the test once more with gusto, this time honing in on Using Imagination. Let’s find out how they got on…

The Challenge: Future Transport

Over the course of the day, students were Working in a Team to research, design, build and test a new form of transport for the future. They were set the challenge from Ronnie the Robot who had travelled back in time to explain what the world would be like many years in the future. Teams applied their Problem Solving and Staying Positive skill through a series of challenges designed to stretch their essential skills beyond what they had experienced thus far. At the end of the day, students tested each other’s designs and practised their presenting by Sharing Ideas in front of the class.

What they said:

  • “We have had one child who doesn’t speak but this morning was engaged enough to come up with his own prototype and started building something. He clearly was listening and applying everything that was said.” – Teacher
  • “They’ve been working really well together, listening and taking account of each other’s ideas – I’m so impressed!” – Teacher
  • “We’ve found a way of compromising and we’ve combined everyone’s ideas together.” – Student
  • “Today we’ve been Staying Positive by saying things like ‘Don’t worry, we can do this!’” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great Challenge Day!
