The School:

Al-Furqan Primary is in its third year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Previously, students have been busy developing a set of eight Essential Skills by taking part in several employer visits to top businesses across Greater Birmingham such as Aon and the Chambers of Commerce, but also by completing a variety of Lesson-Time Projects in their classrooms. The whole school has also taken on a range of Challenge Days: their latest one, ‘Operation: Moonbase’. Today’s challenge was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 1 to Year 6 to put their Essential Skills to the test once more with gusto.

The Challenge: A Day in Politics

Over the course of the day, students had the opportunity to practise their Working in a Team and Leading skills by taking on the role of aspiring politicians. They dived head first into the world of politics, learning about democracy and carrying out debates in some classes before setting up their very own political parties. Students were Sharing Ideas and Problem Solving to decide which areas of society they wanted to help first and how they might spend their budget to support them.

Finally, teams worked against the clock to put together a range of colourful materials to promote their newly-formed parties. At the end of a buzzing enterprise day, classes held an exciting election to determine who had created the most persuasive political party!

What they said:

  • “This class have really improved how they listen to each other and work in teams – I’ve been referencing these skills in all of our lessons across the curriculum since the Autumn Term – it’s paid off. We are having a great day. They love teamwork now.” – Teacher
  • “They have been working really well in their teams and I’ve found this is bringing out the quieter ones so that everyone has a voice.” – Teacher
  • “When you debate with someone, you need to be polite and make eye contact and believe in what you say!” – Student
  • “I really didn’t want to work in this team to begin with – but I managed to stay positive and actually it’s been fun. I’d like to work with this team again.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great Challenge Day!
