The School:

Based in the London Borough of Newham, Hartley Primary School is in its very first year working with Enabling Enterprise to develop their students’ skills. Today’s challenge was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 3 to put their Essential Skills to the test.

The Challenge: Future Transport

Over the course of the day, students were Working in a Team to research, design and build a new form of transport for the future. They were set the challenge from Ronnie the Robot who had travelled back in time to explain what the world would be like many years in the future. Teams applied their Problem Solving and Staying Positive skills through a series of challenges designed to stretch their essential skills like never before.
Working in teams, the students started by thinking about transport they already know about before deciding which features might be helpful in the future. After sketching an initial design, teams worked together to share their ideas and come up with a final group design. This design formed the basis for the 3-D models they built to show off their amazing imaginations!
The following day, students tested each other’s designs and practised their presenting by Sharing Ideas in front of the class.

What they said:

  • “They are loving it, they haven’t even noticed it’s lunch time. I have seen them improve on these skills and I am going to continue to use them throughout the rest of my teaching.” – Teacher
  • “I think the difference from this morning to this afternoon is that we weren’t really working together this morning, we just thought we were!” – Student
  • “If someone isn’t involved, you might need to just give them your job to do and tell them what you need and then you can do something else.” – Student
  • “I’ve got so much better and so has my team, we just needed to talk to each other and then we didn’t run out of time.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great Challenge Day!
