The School: Oriel Academy

Based in the London Borough of Hounslow and part of the Aspirations Academies Trust, Oriel Academy are in their second year of working with Enabling Enterprise. The school has created a vibrant learning community with a caring, inclusive ethos in which all children can flourish, and teachers give students the opportunity to develop a range of skills both in and outside of the classroom. Previously, KS2 students had the opportunity to develop their enterprise skills within the world of work as they took on an exciting challenge at top technology firm IBM.

Today’s challenge formed part of the school’s activities for Science Week and was a fantastic opportunity for students from Nursery through to Year 6 to put their Essential Skills to the test in a challenge that was truly out of this world!

The Challenge: Operation Moonbase

The challenge kicked off with an exciting assembly where students were asked to reflect on the world around us and to identify some of the core issues we face. Using their Problem Solving skills, they thought about ways to find an opportunity to establish a new world, and began Using their Imagination to think about what this might look like! The newly-inducted cadets were then introduced to their task: to establish a new society on a distant moon called Utopia.

Students’ Working in a Team skills were really put to the test as they were faced with a series of challenges that required students to use their Essential Skills. First, teams needed to practise their Problem Solving to select a crew which would support them on their mission, Sharing Their Ideas to put forward the case for their selections and Staying Positive as teams worked against the clock to compromise and reach a final decision that everyone was happy with.

Students then had to Use their Imagination and design a new species of animal to benefit their Utopian society. By Aiming High, teams sought to combine the most desirable features from existing animals on Earth in order to create something magical. Amongst the most creative ideas were woolly pollinating unicorns, fire-breathing wolves with udders, and hybrid creatures with in-built ID cards issued to every new citizen of Utopia!

The next stage of the challenge required students to create a model of their own dream city, the new capital of Utopia. Once again, teams’ ability to Work in a Team was crucial as students worked against the clock, with many Leading their team mates effectively by keeping them on task, supporting where help was needed, and ensuring everybody had a job to do!

The day culminated in a series of persuasive pitches at the Intergalactic Trade Fair, which gave each team the opportunity to show off their fantastic ideas and convince new citizens to make the journey to Utopia in search of a new life.

What they said:

  • “It has been a brilliant day – so, so good! I’ve learnt so much about the kids by having the opportunity to watch!” – Teacher, Year 2
  • “I’m really proud of our teamwork today because we all had a chance to speak, we listened to each other and we helped each other with our jobs so that we got everything done in time.” – Student, Year 3
  • “It’s been great fun… I wish we could do more of this!” – Teaching Assistant, Year 4
  • “This has been a real test for them today, to see how well they can manage their own tasks and get on with their team. It’s not always been easy for them but it has been a lot of fun!” – Teacher, Year 3
  • “I’ve learnt that I don’t always have to be in charge and be the one who is speaking to be a good leader. Today I have seen that leading is also helping others and making sure that everyone in my team is happy and knows what to do.” – Student, Year 6

Thanks to everyone involved for such a great Challenge Day!
