The School:

The Winns Primary School is in its third year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Essential Skills by competing against other teams in the exciting ‘Level Up!‘ Challenge Day and running a range of Enterprise Projects. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 5 to put their Sharing Ideas and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Metaswitch is a UK-based company that designs, develops, manufactures, and markets telecommunications hardware and software, solving complex communication issues for large organisations. Robert and Maureen volunteered to support the students today and share their ideas and expertise in this industry-linked challenge.

The Challenge: Tech-Xperts

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of technology and the many ways in which global employees communicate and work together.
Taking on the role of Technology Companies, teams were challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to design a new app that employees could use to improve their communication. Alongside choosing a catchy name for their new app, teams thought about the different functions the app would have and how each of these might help solve a communication problem. Teams worked together to make key design decisions including the app’s icon and how it would appear in the app store.

The day culminated with the Technology Companies Sharing Ideas about their app and how they had developed their Problem Solving in front of the room, whilst the judges watched their presentations.

What they said:

  • “This is a great opportunity. The students have enjoyed working through the challenge, practising the skills, and developed their vocabulary along the way.” – Teacher
  • “They have such a great range of ideas. It has been particularly good to see some of them develop as they’ve learned more across the day.” – Volunteer
  • “I’d love to work here! There are so many different things that they do and they use the enterprise skills.” – Student
  • “I enjoyed learning about how the different people communicate in different countries. Our app can help them more in the future.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
