The School:

Battersea-based Shaftesbury Park Primary School, a community school with a French bilingual stream, is in its second year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing a set of eight Essential Skills by designing their own video games set in their school and by setting up a society on a distant planet. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 5 to put their Sharing Ideas and Problem Solving skills to the test outside the classroom, with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

IBM is one of the most famous information technology companies in the world. It now focuses on generating innovative solutions for business problems far more than on producing hardware.

The Challenge: Tech-xperts

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Essential Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of technology.
Taking on the role of Technology Companies, teams were challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to design a new app that employees at IBM could use to improve their communication. Alongside choosing a catchy name for their new app, teams thought about the different functions the app would have and how each of these might help solve a communication problem. Teams worked together to make key design decisions including the app’s icon and how it would appear in the app store.

The day culminated with the Technology Companies Sharing Ideas about their app and how they had developed their Problem Solving in front of the room, whilst the judges watched their presentations.

What they said:

  • “The children have been really excited by previous trips and couldn’t wait to get involved with the challenge and skills today!” – Teacher
  • “The apps really came together and showed the creativity and problem-solving skills the students were developing throughout the day.” – Volunteer
  • “We’ve had to stay positive and really think about how we could combine our two ideas together and not argue.” – Student
  • “I hope my app can really help the people at IBM and make their jobs easier.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
