The School:

North Birmingham Academy has just begun to work with Enabling Enterprise as part of the Aiming High programme in partnership with Newman University. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 9 and 10 to put their Team Work and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Bouygues UK has offices and sites across the country and operates in over 80 countries, spanning construction, civil works, energy, services, telecommunications and media.
Bouygues UK delivers award-winning construction, development and regeneration projects to the most exacting standards across public and commercial private sectors. From mixed-used commercial developments and schools to luxury apartments and signature public buildings, they develop and build innovative and sustainable projects.

The Challenge: Decisive Developers

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Essential Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of construction.
Taking on the role of Developers, students were then challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to establish on which site to choose to build their new tall building. Taking the location and needs of the community on board, teams then worked together to build a tower using limited materials. During the build, the teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test as new challenges arose, which put the developers’ budgets under strain.
The day culminated in teams pitching their plan for development to our judges, to see if their building was suitable for construction.

What they said:

  • “The students were really engaged and learnt valuable teamwork and leadership skills. The site visit was extremely valuable as it allowed students to see how the skills they are developing transfer and apply to real work situations” – Teacher
  • “These skills are so important for young people as they enter the workplace. The activities used through the day were a relevant and engaging way to develop skills for young people ” – Volunteer
  • “I enjoyed learning about the different jobs and the skills needed and seeing how and why things like teamwork are so important” – Year 10 Student
  • “I had an amazing day and have a better understanding of what I want to be in the future” – Year 10 Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
