The School:

From the London Borough of Hillingdon, St Matthew’s CE Primary is in its fifth year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing a set of eight essential skills by completing a wide range of Lesson-Time Projects and taking part in several Challenge Days. For example, they have worked as aspiring detectives on a mysterious crime scene on their school premises. They have also launched their very own greetings card companies in a single school day!

Students from different year groups over the years have also had the opportunity to visit top employers across London to apply these same essential skills outside the classroom. Today’s trip was the chance for a select group of Year 3 students to put their Using Imagination and Sharing Ideas skills to the test in the world of work, with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

GE is the world’s Digital Industrial Company, transforming industry with software-defined machines and solutions that are connected, responsive and predictive. GE is organised around a global exchange of knowledge, the “GE Store,” through which each business shares and accesses the same technology, markets, structure and intellect. Each invention further fuels innovation and application across their industrial sectors.
Today, an array of volunteers came from a variety of departments within GE and were ready to support the 7- and 8-year olds on a stretching challenge.

The Challenge: Marketing Moguls

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Essential Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in GE. A special highlight was a quick stop to the post room where some children got to see not only some of the professional equipment from up close, but also the priceless views over London.

Back in the room, students took on the role of a marketing team at a new and exciting company that stocks and sells chairs. Teams first undertook crucial market research to find out what features and benefits the employees wanted before Using Imagination to design a brand new chair. It was really important that students were Sharing Ideas with each other so that they could come up with the most creative and innovative design. Next up, teams decided on the most effective advertising strategy to promote their new product.
The day culminated in teams pitching their design and marketing ideas to a panel of judges in the hope that they could persuade them that their chair was the one to buy.

What they said:

  • “Staff were all very helpful and accommodating. The activities were all engaging – children were all excited and willing to take part. They further developed their teamworking skills and they were all able to communicate ideas. Children shared responsibility within their teams and the majority stayed positive. Overall an amazing day!” – Teacher
  • “This has taught me to think about clear communication with different people, especially young people.” – Volunteer
  • “The way they’ve worked together was incredible: collaboration is certainly our thing here at GE. It’s the skill of the future!” – Volunteer
  • “Their ideas were refreshing: they have no limits and that’s really inspired me. I thought I needed a coffee at the start of the day, but I forgot about it because I was energised just by interacting with them!” – Volunteer
  • “There’s definitely something they’re taking away because I heard one of them say: ‘Come on, this is all about teamwork!’.” – Volunteer
  • “We’re really proud of this chair because of the way we’ve shared our ideas and combined all of them together and we hope you like it!” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
