The School:

Oaklands Primary School is in their 5th year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by creating their own game worlds in the ‘Level Up’ Challenge Day. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 3 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Higgins Group is an award-winning, family-run construction company with over 50 years’ experience in major housing developments. Throughout London and the South East the company currently has 27 live projects ranging from £5million to £150million. Today’s visit to the Peterhead Court development offered the opportunity for the students to experience the world of construction with a real site and the support of a variety of volunteers.

The Challenge: Decisive Developers

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of construction.
Taking on the role of Developers, students were then challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to establish on which site to choose to build their new tall building. Taking the location and nearby features into consideration, teams then worked together to build a tower using limited materials. During the build, the teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test as new challenges arose, which put the developers’ budgets under strain.
The day culminated in teams pitching their plan for development to the judges, to see if their building was suitable for construction.

What they said:

  • “There was a moment in the presentations which has really made my day – seeing incredibly quiet, shy students stand up and speak like this was just wonderful.” – Teacher
  • “It’s amazing how the students are able to grasp the concepts, even at this young age.” – Volunteer
  • “Mixing the students in random groups is clever; it gives them a chance to work with students they haven’t before and challenges them to stay positive.” – Volunteer
  • “I liked working with [my teammate] because she made sure everyone had a turn and shared lots of her imaginative ideas!” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
