The School:

Heartlands High School is in their 3rd year working with Enabling Enterprise. Over the past 3 years, students have been busy developing a set of eight essential Enterprise Skills both in school and the workplace. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 8 to stretch those skills outside the classroom, particularly honing in on Listening and Understanding, Sharing Ideas and Problem Solving with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Pret A Manger is an international sandwich shop chain based in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1986 by Julian Matcalfe and Sinclair Beecham, it now has over 500 stores in 8 different countries, including the UK, the USA, Hong Kong, China, France, UAE, Singapore and Denmark. Today we were joined by the fantastic Annabel, Becky, Nikki, Jess, Lucy & Ozzie.

The Challenge: Superior Service

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of Pret’s Academy and Head Office, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of retail.
Taking on the role of Customer Service Assistants, students were challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to ensure customer experiences were positive and customer satisfaction remained high by Listening Carefully. Tasked with promoting customer loyalty, teams needed to create a brand-new scheme to attract and retain customers.

The day culminated in student Customer Service Teams putting their Sharing Ideas skills to use in demonstrating their understanding of customer service and customer loyalty incentives as they were Presenting their work in front of a panel of judges from Pret.

What they said:

  • “Great organisation and structure! The activities were relevant and pitched right.” – Teacher
  • “I was really impressed with how the students worked together and developed their understanding of customer service.” – Volunteer
  • “To make sure your store has good customer service, you have to be able to stay positive and problem solve quickly and effectively.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
