The Schools:

St John the Baptist based in Andover, The Flying Bull Academy in Portsmouth and Romsey Abbey CE Primary school in Romsey, Southampton, all came together to take part in a an exciting opportunity with Enabling Enterprise to develop the Essential Skills we all need to succeed. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 3 to 6 to put their Sharing Ideas and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

IBM is one of the most famous information technology companies in the world. It now focuses on generating innovative solutions for business problems far more than on producing hardware.

The Challenge: Tech-Xperts

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Essential Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of technology and to gather further market research for the challenge ahead.
Taking on the role of Technology Companies, teams were challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to design a new app that employees could use to improve their communication. Alongside choosing a catchy name for their new app, teams thought about the different functions the app would have and how each of these might help solve a communication problem. Teams worked together to make key design decisions including the app’s icon and how it would appear in the app store.

The day culminated with the Technology Companies Sharing Ideas about their app and how they had developed their Problem Solving in front of the room, whilst the judges watched their presentations.

What they said:

  • “The children continually astounded us during the day as they increased in confidence working as a team to produce amazing apps.” – Headteacher, Julie-Anne Palfrey & Chair of Governors, Liz Wagner
  • “These skills as so important: I use each one of them every single day!” – Volunteer, IBM
  • ”This is an awesome app that you should most definitely get! It includes messaging, sign language and video calls.” – Student, Team Abbey Animators
  • “We’ve worked well in a team by making sure we communicate with each other by speaking really clearly about our TransMate App.” – Student, Team Create & Communicate

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
