The School: Thomas’s Clapham

Based in Wandsworth, Thomas’s Clapham are in their second year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Students develop their skills across the curriculum through the 21st-Century Skills, known as the 8Cs. Previously, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by taking part in the Greetings Card Challenge, where teams ran production lines to create imaginative card designs. Today’s challenge was a fantastic opportunity for students from Reception through to Year 6 to put their Enterprise Skills to the test in a challenge that was truly out of this world!

The Challenge: Operation Moonbase

Over the course of the day, students’ Working in a Team skills were being stretched throughout the day as mixed Year Groups in Years 1-4 came together to work collaboratively. Teams worked to establish a new society on a distant moon called Utopia, undertaking a series of challenges required teams to use their Enterprise Skills, particularly Problem Solving, Using Imagination and Listening Carefully. Teams needed to select a crew to support them on their mission, then design a new species of animal to benefit society before finally creating a model of their own dream city.

In Reception, students were creating life-size astronaut suits in preparation for take-off! Having packed their suitcases, they made sure their Space Passports were ready as they set about creating a new Moonbase, complete with restaurants, riding stables and rocket launch pads.

The day culminated in a series of persuasive pitches at the Intergalactic Trade Fair, which gave each team the opportunity to show off their fantastic ideas and convince would-be citizens to join them on their new adventure to Utopia!

What they said:

  • “It was great to see the students being creative together and helping each other to come up with new ideas.” – Teacher, Reception
  • “Sometimes, we weren’t sure what to decide upon, so we all added our ideas and then we worked together to talk about these and chose the best one… that’s brilliant teamwork!” – Student, Year 2
  • “It’s lovely to see how well they have worked with children from other year groups; it shows great collaboration and teamwork.” – Teacher, Year 3
  • “It’s been a brilliant day. The activities were really creative and very student-centred.” – Asst. Head
  • “We’ve worked well as a team because we realised that you don’t always want to be next to each other and talking to each other all day long, so we would work on our own ideas and then come back together to share these. It helped us to work collaboratively and still get along!” – Student, Year 4

Thanks to everyone for such a great Challenge Day!
