The School: Vicarage Primary

Vicarage Primary School, based in the London Borough of Newham, is in its second year of working with Enabling Enterprise. In school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by completing whole-school Challenge Days which gave students the chance to hone their Sharing Ideas and Leading skills as they built their very own political parties from scratch and, most recently, their Problem Solving skills as they investigated a mysterious crime scene on their school premises.

Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 5 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test once more, with support from professional business volunteers in an exciting workplace.

The Business: JLL

Jones Lang LaSalle Incorporated, or JLL, is a professional services and investment management company specialising in real estate. JLL employ more than 58,000 people in more than 1,000 locations in 80 countries. Alongside construction, development and property management, JLL also offers a range of financial services.

Today from JLL’s offices in Canary Wharf, London, the students were extremely lucky to be joined by Rhiannon, Nick, Karl, Eloise, James, Ramina, Ged, Jenny, Max, Charlotte, Dominic and Meghana, who all brought a wealth of experience, expertise and insight from across the company.

The Challenge: Decisive Developers

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of construction as well as the importance of environmentally-friendly construction to JLL. Taking in the Canary Wharf skyline also allowed students to be inspired by the building shapes, sizes and uses around them.
Taking on the role of Developers, students were then challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to establish on which redevelopment site to build their new tall building. Taking the location and needs of the community on board, teams then worked together to build a tower using limited materials. During the build, the teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test as new challenges arose, which put the developers’ budgets under strain.

The day culminated in students pitching their plans for development to a very special select panel as the teams were joined by JLL directors Ben, Helen and Rob. The three judges were blown away by the teams’ innovative and creative designs and the immense confidence with which each and every student stood to address the room and Shared their Ideas so eloquently.

What they said:

  • “The children were encouraged to take the initiative from the outset of the project. This enabled them to explore their individual creativity and produce great buildings! They will take away an increased confidence in their own creative abilities and a better understanding of how teamwork can produce wonderful results.” – Teacher, Vicarage Primary
  • “It’s amazing for the kids to be involved in something like this… and for us, in fact! I think we may have taken just as much from this as they did!” – Volunteer, JLL
  • “Our team was able to work together and solve problems today. Our tower was not steady and caused us some problems but we stayed calm, shared our ideas on what to do and helped each other to make it work.” – Student, Vicarage Primary

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
