The School:

Preston Park Primary School is in their second year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills and seeing how they can support their literacy and numeracy lessons, through creating board games using Maths, for example. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 5 to put their Using Imagination and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Founded in 1942, Hammerson plc is a major British property development and investment company. A FTSE company with a portfolio of retail property in the UK and France of around £7.7 billion, including 22 prime shopping centres, 22 convenient retail parks and investments in 15 premium designer outlet villages.

The Challenge: Daring Developers

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. This allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in Hammerson before going on a tour of the premises, including an exciting visit to the roof terrace and boardroom.
Taking on the role of Developers, students were then challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to establish on which site to choose to build their new retail centre. Taking the location and needs of the community on board, teams then worked together to sketch and build a model of their new design. During the build, the teams’ Using Imagination skills were put to the test as they had to think of creative ways to present their ideas with a very short deadline!
The day culminated in teams pitching their plan for development to the judges and highlighting what made their new centre stand out. They also reflected on the skills they had used and what they had achieved in their teams.

What they said:

  • “This is a really great opportunity for the kids. It is lovely to see them working so well together, especially when they’re all mixed and from different classes.” – Teacher
  • “They really impressed me in how they supported each other. Some were nervous for the presentations but their team really helped them.” – Volunteer
  • “We are a great development company because we work well as a team, for example 2 people worked on one section of our model and the others had different jobs.” – Student
  • “Even though we didn’t quite finish, we will improve even more in the future!” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
