The School:

From the London Borough of Waltham Forest, Newport School is in its fifth year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by taking on a broad range of Lesson-Time Projects, but also by completing whole-school Challenge Days when, for example, when they created their very own political parties from scratch or more recently when they set up a brand new human colony on a distant planet. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 5 to stretch all eight of their essential enterprise skills outside the classroom, particularly putting their Staying Positive and Problem Solving to the test in the world of work, with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

UBS is a global bank, providing services in over 50 countries. Specialising in Wealth Management and Global Asset Management they provide services for high net worth individuals, private, corporate, and institutional clients all over the world. Worldwide, UBS employs over 60,000 people who speak more than 130 languages and are citizens of 135 countries.
Today an array of volunteers from different departments within UBS were on hand to support the budding entrepreneurs on this financial challenge.

The Challenge: Lend-a-Hand

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Teams were savvy about getting as much advice as possible from the volunteers on how to use their skills to the best.
Taking on the role of Financial Advisors, students were given the task of advising a client to make sensible financial decisions for a range of different life events. Teams had to put their Problem Solving skills to the test to work out the pros and cons of different suggestion. Taking the priorities and needs of the client on board, teams then worked together to suggest the best possible course of action for their client. The teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test when they outlined the pros and cons of each of the solutions they considered, which had an impact on the advice they were giving their client later in the day.
The day culminated in teams holding a budgeting meeting with the client to share their top tips and financial advice. A set of new volunteers from UBS posed as judges in the afternoon and watched the meeting to decide which team had used their Problem Solving and Staying Positive skills to make the most sensible decisions along the way.

What they said:

  • “They’ve really surprised me: I was expecting some of the groups to struggle a little, but in fact, they have shown amazing teamwork and they have been engaged all the way. Also, it’s really good for them to see this environment as it’s changed their perception of professional careers. I know some of them who have said one day they’d like to become a vet, but after this they’ve decided they now want to become a banker. I can’t think of any suggestion to make the day even better. And the EE team have been very consistent in their support to us, so thank you!” – Teacher
  • “The children were really impressive! They worked so well together… I couldn’t believe their level of confidence!” – Volunteer
  • “It was fun, I don’t think I would change anything about the activities.” – Volunteer
  • “I wouldn’t have been able to do all that at their age!” – Volunteer
  • “Today we encouraged each other by helping each other during a tough quiz.” – Student
  • Staying Positive is important because if people are feeling down or if they’ve made a mistake, you can cheer them up and encourage them to keep trying – we learn from our mistakes anyway.” – Student
  • “Budgeting helps you stay positive and problem solve since you can take money from your daily savings and build exactly the lifestyle that you like.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
