The School: Old Moat Primary School

Old Moat Primary School in South Manchester are in their second year of working with Enabling Enterprise. They have made a fantastic start to their enterprise journey by ensuring all year groups are involved and do three Lesson-Time Projects a year. Alongside their hugely successful Challenge Day last term, this innovative and enthusiastic primary school love the opportunity to attend trips to local business partners such as Brewin Dolphin.

The Business: Brewin Dolphin, Manchester

Brewin Dolphin is one of the UK’s leading providers of personalised, discretionary wealth management services, offering investment management and financial planning services to investors and intermediaries. With origins dating back to the mid-18th century, they were one of the founding firms of the London Stock Exchange. They have 28 offices throughout the UK & Ireland and have a wealth of experience dealing with investment markets.

The Challenge: Lend-A-Hand

Today was all about Problem Solving and Staying Positive as the pupils took on a range of challenges to improve their knowledge and understanding of personal finance. Working in a Team they took part in a fast-pace game of ’Higher and Lower’ in order to test their knowledge of how much things might cost in a household. Aiming High it was all about Problem Solving as they made difficult decisions in regards to budgeting and lifestyle. Would they splash out on an expensive mobile phone package or save up for a sunny holiday aboard? It was fantastic to see the students Listening Carefully to the options and Using Imagination to decide which option was the best.

Finally the students showcased Leading through taking on the role of financial advisors and helping a family make smart decisions on how to budget sensibly. Their teacher and the volunteers were proud and impressed to see the pupils confidently Sharing Ideas by presenting everything they had learned throughout the day.

What they said:

  • “Well done to all the students, especially those who have shown real leadership today even though they are generally quite quiet at school.” – Teacher
  • “The pupils were very friendly and polite, all our staff commented on that. It was great to see them learning this kind of important information for the future.” – Volunteer
  • “I’m so proud of everyone today, I thought our presentations were great” – Student
  • “I had butterflies in my stomach when I arrived today but it’s actually been really fun and I enjoyed presenting.” – Student

Thanks to Brewin Dolphin for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from Old Moat Primary School for coming along.
