The School:

Victoria Primary Academy is in their first year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students will shortly develop their Enterprise Skills by hosting a whole-school Challenge Day and taking part in Lesson-Time Projects. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 6 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Aon is a global professional services firm that advises clients on the topics of risk and people. The company is a provider of risk management, insurance and reinsurance brokerage, human resource solutions and outsourcing services. It employs 72,000 people in 500 offices in more than 120 countries and has its headquarters in London. Until 2014 Aon was the principal partner and global shirt sponsor of the Premier League team Manchester United F.C.

The Challenge: Lend-a-Hand

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of finance.
Taking on the role of Financial Advisors, students were given the task of advising a client to make sensible financial decisions for a range of different life events. Teams had to put their Problem Solving skills to the test to work out the pros and cons of different suggestions. Taking the priorities and needs of the client on board, teams then worked together to suggest the best possible course of action for their client. The teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test when they realised that decisions they had made earlier on were having an impact on the advice they were giving their client later in the day.
The day culminated in teams holding a budgeting meeting with the client to share their top tips and financial advice. Volunteers watched the meeting and used their expertise to judge which team had used their Problem Solving and Staying Positive skills to make the most sensible decisions along the way.

What they said:

  • “They showed great maturity and were fantastic at working together, it was fantastic to see their confidence improve throughout the day.” – Teacher
  • “Their enthusiasm, team work and ability to articulate what they had done was fantastic.” – Volunteer
  • “I really enjoyed working with different people today and getting to nosey round the office. I couldn’t believe that all the people in the office who were so busy took the time to talk to us and be so friendly.” – Student
  • “I loved working as a team and listening to each other’s ideas and mixing up all the ideas to make a team decision.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
