The School:

Newport School in Leyton is in their 5th year working with Enabling Enterprise, while Opossom trust partner Dawlish School has worked with us for two. Previously, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills through trips to leading finance company J.P. Morgan and BBC Worldwide. Today’s challenge was a fantastic opportunity for students from Reception to Year 5 to put their Enterprise Skills to the test.

The Challenge: Operation Moonbase

Over the course of the day, students used their Working in a Team skills to establish a new society on a distant moon called Utopia. A series of challenges required teams to use their Enterprise Skills, particularly practising their Problem Solving, Using Imagination and Listening Carefully. Teams needed to select a crew to support them on their mission, then design a new species of animal to benefit society before finally creating a model of their own dream city. The day culminated in a series of persuasive pitches at the Intergalactic Trade Fair which gave each team the opportunity to show off their fantastic ideas.

What they said:

  • “For some of our students, presenting confidently to the whole class is a great achievement. Sometimes the language barrier can mean they aren’t comfortable doing that, but today they seem to be in their element.” – Teacher, Newport School
  • “I’m pleased to see there were a couple of ‘natural’ leaders in my class who were happy to let others have a go today.” – Teacher, Newport School
  • “It’s really important for them to see how their teams work better when they share out the work so everyone has a job.” – Teacher, Dawlish School
  • “We don’t just use the skills on Challenge Days – we use them everywhere! Like Listening – if you don’t do that while the teacher is speaking people won’t know what’s going on. Everyone in your group will just do their own thing.” – Student, Newport School
  • “We split up into smaller groups so that we could have more space to do our jobs, but we make sure to keep communicating so we don’t forget we’re a team.” – Student, Dawlish School
  • “We listened to all of the ideas and when we couldn’t decide we had a little vote to see which one was best.” – Student, Dawlish School

Thanks to everyone for such a great Challenge Day!
