The School:

Newham-based Salisbury Primary is in its sixth year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by taking on a broad range of Lesson-Time Projects, but also by completing whole-school Challenge Days when, for example, they investigated a mysterious crime scene, or when they launched their very own greetings card companies. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 4 to stretch all eight of their essential enterprise skills outside the classroom, particularly putting their Staying Positive and Problem Solving to the test in the world of work, with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Higgins Group is an award-winning, family-run construction company with over 50 years’ experience in major housing developments. Throughout London and the South East the company currently has 15 live projects ranging from £5million to £150million. Today volunteers Kenan, Leah, Polly, Sarah, Sarah (M) and Susan were on hand with the expertise from their varied job roles to support the budding entrepreneurs on this construction challenge.

The Challenge: Decisive Developers

The day started off with an introduction about Higgins from Mandy, who then led the students on an extremely insightful tour of the premises. This allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of construction, visiting nearly all of the departments within the Head Office in Debden, from HR to the New Homes Department to Aftersales. A few students even got to see a close-up of the equipment that was used in the printing room and the post room. Students really made an impression on the Higgins staff as they were confidently asking questions about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs.

Back in the room, taking on the role of Developers, students were then challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to choose which site to build a new tall building. Factoring in the pros and cons of each location, as well as a few success criteria for their project, teams then worked together to build a 3-D model of their tower using limited materials. During the build, the teams’ essential skills were stretched further as the aspiring developers were even challenged to address noise reduction during the construction phase!

The day culminated in teams pitching their plan for development to the judges, who were spoilt for choice when it came to praising their ideas for their new development. Before the budding entrepreneurs left the room, one special guest – Phil Safe – had a unique gift for the children to walk away with: their very own customised Higgins notebook. What a fantastic souvenir!

What they said:

  • “The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The activity was fantastic and challenging. I also think the children have developed their cooperative skills. Today I saw them working well in team, staying positive and listening to each other, which is something they often struggle with.” – Teacher
  • “I was amazed by their confidence and how quickly they got into speaking to all the adults. I wouldn’t have been able to do that at their age!” – Volunteer
  • “They understood the challenge well.” – Volunteer
  • “I think it was pitched at the right level for them.” – Volunteer
  • “We are proud of this tower that we all cooperated on – it’s the best!” – Student
  • “Our spacious community centre has nature all around it…” – Student
  • “We worked together and used all the imagination we can to include many many things we can on the 9th floor. You can find out when you join.” – Student
  • “I want to work here one day.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
