The School:

Oasis Academy Woodview is in their fifth year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by Lesson-time Projects and Challenge Days. For example Year 4 have completed the Brilliant Books project while the school took part in the ‘Crime Scene‘ Challenge Day. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Years 3 & 4 to put their Listening Carefully and Using Imaginaton skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

The University of Birmingham has been one of the UK’s top universities since its foundation in 1900. Around 16,000 students from all over the world currently study there as well as thousands of researchers. The University is a world leader in many research fields including Sport and Exercise Science, Computer Science and Cancer Studies.

The Challenge: Uni-que University

The day started off with the students using their Listening Carefully skills by interviewing the student ambassadors to find out about their different experiences at university and the Enterprise Skills required to do their courses. Students then went on a tour of the University, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of faculties and subjects which you can study at university as well as the iconic clock tower the historic Aston Web Building.
Over the course of the day, teams explored what makes a university, before researching and designing their own dream university as a way of channelling their Using Imagination skills. The day culminated in group presentations to student ambassadors from the University, designed to persuade prospective future students to study there.

What they said:

  • “It was so beneficial for our students to work with the University of Birmingham Ambassadors – they were so positive and knew so much about the University when we went on the tour.” – Teacher
  • “The best thing about today was seeing how engaged and enthusiastic our students were in the task.” – Teacher
  • “It’s been a very enjoyable day! The students were so engaged and clearly so excited about being here. It was great to be able to give teams feedback and help them improve their teamwork and presenting skills. ” – Volunteer
  • “The best thing about our team was our sharing ideas and using imagination skills. For example we did not go for the most obvious facilities in our faculty.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
