The School:

Ss John & Monica Catholic Primary is in its third year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by taking part in Lesson Time Projects and Challenge Days. Court Farm Primary is in its second year and look forward to their Challenge Day later in the term. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for 15 students from Year 5 from each school, to put their Listening Carefully and Using Imaginaton skills to the test with the support from university student ambassadors.

The Business: Aston University

Aston is a leading UK university specialising in Business, Engineering and the Sciences with an international reputation – it has students from over 120 countries currently studying there. Situated on a 60-acre campus in the heart of the city centre of Birmingham, it offers accommodation to over 3,000 of its 10,000+ undergraduate students, along with excellent amenities to support studies, work and leisure for students and staff alike – making it a popular choice for further study.
We were lucky to be supported by student ambassadors Ifra, Shazida, Daniel, Omaya and Soniya who were all studying a huge range of subjects and were fantastic at supporting the children with their essential enterprise skills.

The Challenge: Uni-que University

The day started off with the students using their Listening Carefully skills by interviewing the student ambassadors to find out about their different experiences at university and the Enterprise Skills required to do their courses. Students then went on a tour of the University, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of faculties and facilities that Aston University has to offer.
Over the course of the day, teams explored what makes a university, before researching and designing their own dream university as a way of channelling their Using Imagination skills. The day culminated in group presentations to student ambassadors from the University, designed to persuade prospective students to study there in future.

What they said:

  • “This fantastic day gives the children an opportunity to develop a huge range of skills and encourages thinking outside the box. It really sparked something in my class: they came away excited with aspirational ideas for the future!” – Y5 Teacher, Court Farm Primary
  • “A wonderful opportunity where their communication and language skills were developed when the children interacted successfully with pupils from another school. We were most impressed with their design skills and it was clear that many of the children were inspired to go to University in the future.” – Head Teacher, SS John & Monica Catholic Primary
  • “It’s been so rewarding working with these students for the day, they have been just brilliant!” – Student Ambassador, Aston University
  • “We worked so hard together, using our imagination and working in a team has been good fun as we didn’t all know each other this morning, but we do now!” – Student, Court Farm Primary

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
