The School:

Moorthorpe Primary is in their second year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by taking part in Lesson-time Projects as well as Challenge Days such as ‘Crime Scene‘ last year or ‘Operation: Moonbase’ earlier this academic year. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 4 and 5 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

BuroHappold Engineering is an international, integrated engineering consultancy operating in 23 locations worldwide, with over 50 partners and 1,800 employees including some of the world’s leading consulting engineers. For 40 years they’ve been building their reputation for delivering creative, value-led building and city solutions for an ever-changing world.

The Challenge: Decisive Developers

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of construction.
Taking on the role of Developers, students were then challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to establish on which site to choose to build their new tall building. Taking the location and needs of the community on board, teams then worked together to build a tower using limited materials. During the build, the teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test as new challenges arose, which put the developers’ budgets under strain.
The day culminated in teams pitching their plan for development to the judges, who posed as local and new residents, to see if their building was suitable for construction.

What they said:

  • “They’ve done so well! The students really rose to the challenge today and the volunteers have been great.” – Teacher
  • “It’s so important for the children to be able to experience things like this… I wish I had this when I was in school.” – Volunteer
  • “I liked looking around the offices and seeing all the different jobs and nice new people who work here.” – Student
  • “I enjoyed the building [the paper towers] because we had limited materials so it was a challenge.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
