The School:

Ealing-based Montpelier Primary is in its fourth year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their essential Enterprise Skills by taking on a broad range of Lesson-Time Projects, but also by completing whole-school Challenge Days when, for example, they set up a brand new society on a distant moon, or when they designed their very own transport prototypes for future generations to use. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 4 to stretch all eight of their essential Enterprise Skills outside the classroom, particularly putting their Staying Positive and Problem Solving to the test in the world of work, with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

UBS is a global bank, providing services in over 50 countries. Specialising in Wealth Management and Global Asset Management they provide services for high net worth individuals, private, corporate, and institutional clients all over the world. Worldwide, UBS employs over 60,000 people who speak more than 130 languages and are citizens of 135 countries.
Today volunteers Ankit, Caroline, Ed, Jon, Simon and Tom came from a range of departments within UBS to support the budding entrepreneurs on this financial challenge. At the end of the day, special guest David, who is an advisor for UBS, offered some personalised feedback for each team.

The Challenge: Lend-a-Hand

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Teams were savvy about getting as much advice as possible from the volunteers on how to use their skills to the best.
Taking on the role of Financial Advisors, students were given the task of advising a client to make sensible financial decisions for a range of different life events. Teams had to put their Problem Solving skills to the test to work out the pros and cons of different suggestions. Taking the priorities and needs of the client on board, teams then worked together to suggest the best possible course of action for their client. The teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test when they realised that decisions they had made earlier on were having an impact on the advice they were giving their client later in the day.
The day culminated in teams sharing their ideas with the room. Special guest David, joined the panel of volunteers who watched and offered the teams feedback on their hard work and some top tips for their next presentation.

What they said:

  • “It’s been an amazing day – we’ve all loved it! The budgeting activity was great and I loved the strategy that was used to get everyone to speak in their teams.” – Teacher
  • “I’m impressed! I was surprised at how much good stuff is coming out of each team. I’m very hopeful for the future of these kids: when I was at school it was all very academic, but it’s very good that you’re teaching those transferable skills that they can apply in life.” – Volunteer
  • “The timings of the day were perfect, it all ran smoothly.” – Volunteer
  • “I’m impressed how quickly they put their presentations together! Also, their receptive capacity was impressive.” – Volunteer
  • “I was shocked at how wise those kids are! By the end of the challenge, you could tell they understood, and they were very professional, building on each other’s ideas.” – Volunteer
  • “The children were very good at offering up ideas.” – Volunteer
  • “There was great collaboration among you and you made very wise budgeting decisions.” – Volunteer
  • “Great impact to have humour in your presentation!” – Volunteer
